Martin Luther King Jr. day
« on: January 17, 2007, 02:43:08 pm »

Does anyone besides me think it's unfair to the whole civil rights movement that Martin Luther King Jr. get his own holiday? I think if they were going to make a holiday celebrating the civil rights movement, they should have given it a name that shows that.

Don't get me wrong, Martin Luther King Jr did play a big part in the civil rights movement, but he was neither the first nor the only person to push for civil rights reform.

Well, in the same way, Washington was just one player in the liberation of the U.S., and he gets his own holiday (though now they lumped it with Lincoln's birthday and call it "President's Day")  Where's Ben Franklin day?  John Adams only gets a beer.  And in England they have a day named after an attempted terrorist (Guy Fawkes).

People are just people, who work, guided by their best or worst impulses.  History decides who we remember.  If I had to put one face on the civil rights movement, at least he's clean, reputable and well-spoken.  And like Lincoln, he was publically murdered for what he was trying to accomplish, which makes him something of a martyr.

The rest (such as naming every spare street, bridge, lightpost and fire hydrant "The MLK Memorial (whatever)" ) is just an attempt to assuage guilt, and make the appearance of progressive and egalitarian beliefs, when the reality is little improved from forty years ago, especially here in the southern U.S.
